Smart Modulating Thermostat FAQ

Who can control the Thermostat?

Anyone with a Netatmo account linked to the relevant products; account access can be shared between several users.

How is the Thermostat controlled?

The Netatmo Smart Modulating Thermostat can be controlled online using the Home + Control app (IOS & Android).
Please note that the Thermostat also has manual commands.

How many Smart Modulating Thermostats can i add to the same netatmo account or the same house?

You can add as many Smart Modulating Thermostats to your Netatmo account as you like. Up to ten Thermostats can be added within the same house.

How do the relay and the SmartModulating Thermostat communicate?

The Smart Modulating Thermostat only communicates with the Relay in long-range radio frequency via a secured protocol developed by Netatmo. The Relay uses Wi-Fi to communicate with the Internet unit. We recommend placing the Relay at a central point within your home. It does not connect to public Internet access points (hotspots).

How does the relay connect to the internet?

The Relay must be connected via a 2.4 GHz personal Wi-Fi network. It does not connect to public Internet access points (hotspots).

Will my products keep working if the wi-fi connection is lost?

If the Wi-Fi connection is lost, the Smart Modulating Thermostat will continue to apply the schedule or setpoint temperature that was operating before the connection went down (Away mode, Frost Protection Mode or manual setpoint). The heating can also be controlled manually, directly from the Thermostat.

With the connection offline:

  • It will not be possible to interact remotely, or to modify schedules or settings.
  • The manual buttons on the Thermostat itself can still be used to force manual setpoints. The manual setpoints will apply as specified in the advanced settings of the Energy app before the connection was lost: Operating mode > Default duration of manual setpoints (3 hours by default).
  • The Auto-Adapt feature (Predictive) is also disabled, as this uses the outdoor temperature readings, which are not available when the connection is offline.
All features of the Thermostat will be restored automatically once the connection is back.

Will my products keep working in the event of a power cut?

The heating and Netatmo products will stop working. However, our equipment is designed to resume operation automatically once power is restored.

Where is the thermostat’s temperature sensor?

The temperature sensor is housed within the Thermostat unit.

What is the power consumption of the relay unit?

The relay unit’s power consumption is 500 mW, which equates to around 50 euro cents per year.

What is the maximum allowable distance between the Smart Modulating Thermostat and the relay?

The Thermostat will remain connected to its Relay up to 100 metres in an open space. Please note that obstacles such as walls or a change in floor etc. may reduce this range.

What power supply does the Smart Thermostat use?

The Thermostat uses three AAA batteries (supplied). It has a battery life of two years. The Relay is plugged into the mains through the boiler adapter.

Is it possible to create more than one heating schedule?

Yes, it is possible to create up to ten different heating schedules.

Can I manage a multi-zone installation?

Yes, if the installation has several heating circuits (e.g. ground floor and first floor). Each zone must be regulated either by a Smart Thermostat, a Smart Modulating Thermostat or Smart Radiator Valves, depending on the type of installation. This means you can set different temperatures according to the zones to ensure greater comfort and energy savings.

Can I control the temperature room by room?

Yes, you can add Additional Smart Radiator Valves to your installation in order to control the temperature room by room.

What features does compatibility with Apple Homekit give me?

Compatibility with Apple HomeKit means that you can control your heating by voice commands and, in some cases, create routines.

What if my Thermostat is placed in a room where there is no radiator?

In this case, the Thermostat will not be able to control the temperature of your home effectively, as temperature variations will only be detected indirectly. We suggest that you install your Thermostat in a room that is central within your home, is integral to your household routine and can be heated correctly by your radiators, such as the living room.

What is the difference between a modulating boiler and an ON/OFF boiler?

An ON/OFF boiler is turned on or off depending on the Smart Modulating Thermostat's orders to match the room temperature with the setpoint temperature.
A modulating boiler adjusts the water temperature in the pipes depending on the Smart Modulating Thermostat's orders to match the room temperature with the setpoint temperature.

What is the Auto-Adapt function?

The Auto-Adapt by Netatmo function allows to reach the right temperature at the right time.
It continuously analyzes the household insulation. After an initial 2-week observation period, the Thermostat knows the time needed to heat the home.
It takes into account the local outdoor temperature, measured by our partner Meteo Group.

What is the difference between Netatmo first Thermostat and this one? Is it a second version of the first Thermostat?

The Netatmo Smart Thermostat is compatible with classic ON/OFF boilers. The new Netatmo Smart Modulating Thermostat is compatible with modulating OpenTherm boilers. They are 2 different products that fit 2 types of installations.

How does the Thermostat modulates the temperature of the water in the pipe ?

Thanks to the modulation algorithm, the user can optimise the heating temperature of the boiler. This parameter can be manually adjusted in the thermostat "heating curve" advanced settings : the higher it is the warmer the temperature will be in the pipes.

Does the Thermostat control domestic hot water?

The Modulating Thermostat can only control domestic hot water for OpenTherm boilers equipped with a hot water tank.
As with the heating, a schedule can be set up to turn your water heater on or off according to your needs. You can also check and change the domestic hot water temperature from your app in the Thermostat settings:
If you're away for a long period of time, it's recommended that you enable 'Away' mode. This will automatically turn off your water heater.
In summer, when you want to switch off your heating but continue to use hot water, enable 'Frost Protection' mode. Your domestic hot water schedule will continue to apply.

Is my installation compatible?

The Netatmo Smart Modulating Thermostat is designed to work with your Open Therm modulating boiler and make the most of it. It controls the modulation of the boiler, and you will benefit from the remote control mode, the Auto-Adapt function, the schedule according to your habits and the fine tuned regulation(PID).

What is the auto-care function?

The Auto-Care feature notifies you of any problem detected with your boiler or with the operation of your heat pumps. Via the app, it will notify you of the exact problems it detects in your boiler. In this way, you can easily identify the problem and share the information with your heating engineer. There is no longer any need to call them out to make a simple diagnosis! It also informs you when the Thermostat batteries are low.
