Wireless Thermostat

An atmosphere thermostat is a small device that regulates the running of your boiler while maintaining a consistent ambient temperature in your home. Using a thermal sensor, it reads the ambient temperature in the room where it's installed and switches the boiler on or off depending on whether the setpoint temperature has been reached. This prevents temperature differences and saves you from having to constantly attend to your boiler. Although there are many different types of thermostat, there are two main versions: wired and wireless.

What is a wireless atmosphere thermostat?

A wireless thermostat is a type of atmosphere thermostat that, unlike wired versions, isn't directly connected to your boiler. It runs on batteries and communicates with the boiler via radio waves. A receiver is installed on the boiler, while the wireless atmosphere thermostat is placed in a room and reads the ambient temperature.

If the temperature of the room is below the setpoint temperature, the atmosphere thermostat sends a signal to the receiver, which starts up the boiler. Once the comfort temperature has been reached, the wireless thermostat tells the receiver to switch off the boiler. Discover all our products

The benefits of wireless atmosphere thermostats

Wireless atmosphere thermostats have many advantages over their wired counterparts.
  • Fast and easy installation
A wireless thermostat is very easy to install. Whereas a wired atmosphere thermostat means you need to connect and install a cable to position the device, a wireless version can be fitted in a few moments by screwing a bracket onto a wall and connecting a receiver to the boiler pump. If you previously had a standard wired atmosphere thermostat, all you need to do is remove the current cables and replace them with the cables that come with your wireless thermostat's receiver. Installing a wireless atmosphere thermostat is therefore very easy, you don't need to be particularly good with electronics and you don't need the help of a professional.
  • Easy to (re)position
In order to work properly, thermostats can't just be installed anywhere, as the temperature measured by the sensor can cause the device to work incorrectly if it's exposed to air currents or a heat source. The thermostat therefore needs to be placed far away from radiators, direct sunlight, bulbs and electrical devices that produce heat to prevent an incorrect signal being sent to the heating system, which could switch on unnecessarily and cause overheating in your home or not produce enough heat depending on the situation. It's therefore best to choose a wireless atmosphere thermostat, as you can place it wherever you feel is best in the room without having to worry about connecting via a cable.

If after installation you realise that you chose the wrong place for the device or that you want to rearrange your furniture, you can also reposition the thermostat without a problem. Some thermostats like the smart model from Netatmo also come in a freestanding version. These don't require a bracket, so you don't need to drill any holes in your walls and you can move it if necessary.
  • A few drawbacks
Wireless products nevertheless have a few disadvantages: they're more expensive than a standard wired model, although this price difference is offset by their features and the fact they're easy to install and use. You can also install one yourself, which saves you money because you don't need to call out a professional.

The other thing you need to consider when buying is the range of the radio waves of the product you choose, particularly if you have a large home. Similarly, radio waves cause a potential risk of interference if you use other products that work on the same type of radio waves.

The different types of wireless thermostat

The market for home heating regulation products is huge and there are many products available for controlling your heating appliances. Wireless thermostats include non-programmable products, models that can be programmed and products that connect to the internet.
  • Non-programmable wireless thermostats
This is the simplest model and although you can use it to regulate the temperature in your home, you can't program different timeslots to adjust your comfort based on how your home is occupied. It maintains a consistent temperature but only generates moderate energy savings.
  • Programmable wireless thermostats
With this type of product you can regulate the temperature in your home with programming that fits your timetable. A programmable thermostat runs on a clock and provides several setpoint temperatures based on your habits. This allows you to heat less at night or during the day when you're out, thereby saving you from wasting energy.
  • Smart atmosphere thermostats
Smart models are not only programmable, allowing you to program the temperature based on chosen timeslots, they can also be remotely controlled using your smartphone or tablet. They communicate with the internet via Wi-Fi, which makes them even easier to use. You can control your heating directly on your phone and track your energy consumption. Although they're more expensive than a standard programmable device, smart thermostats allow you to make even more savings and quickly offset the cost of purchase.
