Matter is simplifying the world of smart homes by allowing you to control several products with a single app. All you need to do is buy a Matter-compatible product and plug it in at home.
A universal standard
Connected devices can be complex to install and are only compatible with a limited number of ecosystems, which tends to put some consumers off. In response to this, leaders in the smart home industry — from chip and electronic component manufacturers to smart device designers and product testing organisations — have come together to address these challenges. And the result is a new standard called Matter.
Version 1.0 of the Matter standard was launched by the Connectivity Standard Alliance (CSA) in 2022, simplifying the installation and use of connected devices. Matter aims to enable all compatible smart devices to communicate with each other securely, quickly and seamlessly, regardless of their brand or communication protocol.
Matter benefits
- Simplicity: When choosing your product, you only need to check one thing : if it has the Matter logo, the product is compatible. Your device can then be installed and controlled in various compatible ecosystems quickly and easily.
- Security: All products must be authenticated before they can be added to the Matter network. This ensures that only CSA-certified devices can be integrated. In addition, all data exchanges are protected by end-to-end data encryption.
- Interoperability: All devices and ecosystems with the Matter logo are compatible with each other. Users simply choose the products that suit their needs and integrate them into the ecosystem of their choice with ease.
- Reliability: Even if internet connection is lost, the Matter network continues to work and the devices that comprise it continue to communicate with each other. This means you can continue using your devices via your switches or smartphone.
How does it work?
Matter is a common language that allows all connected devices to communicate with each other. However, although Matter is a language, it needs communication channels to function, so it relies on communication protocols such as Wi-Fi or Thread. Manufacturers can therefore choose the communication channel best suited to their products.
It is also possible to connect products that are not natively Matter-compatible using bridges that act as translators between Matter and non-Matter products.
To start using Netatmo Matter products, you need two things:
- A Matter smart home controller
- A Matter-compatible product ready to be installed
Check for the Matter logo to ensure compatibility with other products with the same logo. The specific brand does not matter. Then, all you need to do is add your connected system to create scenes and automations.
Integrate your Netatmo products
Netatmo has always been committed to offering products that are compatible with as many ecosystems as possible.
Our current ranges are mostly already compatible with popular voice assistants. They have become Matter controllers and now act as translators between your old Netatmo products and your new Matter products. With a motion sensor, you can turn on the light on your Céliane with Netatmo or lower the temperature on your Netatmo Smart Thermostat when a window is open. Our products, whether migrated to Matter or not, will therefore always be compatible.
Looking to the future together
